Lüneberg Circle Drive

The route between Wakkerstroom and Lüneberg offers some of the most spectacular views that you will see anywhere. Take a packed picnic or stop off at the Whistling Duck’s Coffee shop for traditional German hospitality.
Pony rides, hiking and a lovely kiddies playground awaits you. Why not take the tar road there and the dirt road back for two very different experiences. The drive is about 40 minutes to an hour each way.

Historical & Cultural

St Mark’s Church

Bushman Paintings

Our best kept secret is the bushman paintings which can only be seen by appointment with Chris because they are so precious to us. There are seven Khoi-san rock art shelters in the area, some with up to eighty individual paintings.

Historical Monuments

Wakkerstroom has 3 national monuments, namely St Mark’s Church, the Court House and the Old Kruger Bridge. Worth a visit, or learn more about them on an historical tour with Chris Smit - 017 7300284.

Historical Tours

Take a guided cultural tour through the village with our local historian, Chris Smit, a resident in Wakkerstroom for over 70 years and a wealth of knowledge. Let the history come alive with stories of the Anglo-Boer War, how Ghandi fought for the rights of a local Indian shopkeeper soon after he arrived in South Africa; find out H. Rider Haggard’s connection to Wakkerstroom; visit the graves of fallen war heroes and relive 150 years of this fascinating village.

Visit The Roost and feed the Alpacas. These animals are a rare find and you won’t see them in a zoo. See how the wool is turned into yarn for making non-allergic winter garments. Purchase your own yarn and knit a scarf or a beanie.
